Naptime Afghan is a cozy design stitched in soothing pastels of monet print, delft blue, petal pink, pale yellow and orchid worsted-weight yarns and size M/13 crochet hook.

Materials

  • Red Heart Super Saver economy size medium (worsted) weight yarn (solids: 7 oz/364 yds/198g per skein; multis: 5 oz/278 yds/141g per skein):
    9 oz #310 monet print (A)
    4 oz each #885 delft blue (B)
    #373 petal pink (C)
    #322 pale yellow (D)
    and #530 orchid (E)
  • Size M/13/9mm crochet hook or size needed to obtain gauge

Gauge
9 sc = 4 inches

Pattern Note
Leave 8-inch length when beginning and ending each new color to be worked into fringe when finishing.

Special Stitches
Half double crochet X-stitch (hdc X-st): Sk next unworked st, hdc in next st; working behind hdc just made, hdc in sk st.
Bobble: Holding back on hook last lp of each st, work 3 dc in indicated st or sp, yo, draw through all 4 lps on hook.
2-half double crochet decrease (2-hdc dec): [Yo, insert hook in next hdc, yo, draw up a lp] 3 times, yo, draw through all 7 lps on hook.

Instructions

Afghan
Row 1: With A, ch 91, sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in each rem ch across, turn. (90 sc)
Row 2: Ch 2 (counts as first hdc throughout), hdc X-st hdc X-st (see Special Stitches) across to last st, hdc in last st, turn. (44 hdc X-st, 2 hdc)
Row 3: Ch 1, sc in each st across. Do not turn. Fasten off. (90 sc)
Row 4: Join B with a sl st in first sc, ch 1, sc in same sc, sc in each rem sc across, turn.
Row 5: Ch 3 (counts as first dc), bobble (see Special Stitches) in next sc, [ch 1, sk next sc, bobble in next sc] across to last 2 sts, ch 1, sk next st, dc in next st, turn. (44 bobbles, 2 dc)
Row 6: Ch 1, sc in first dc, 2 sc in each cl across, sc in 3rd ch of beg ch-3. Do not turn. Fasten off. (90 sc)
Row 7: Join A with a sl st in first sc, ch 1, sc in same sc, sc in each rem sc across, turn.
Row 8: Ch 1, sc in each of first 2 sc, [dc in each of next sc, sc in each of next 2 sc] across, turn.
Row 9: Ch 3 (counts as first dc throughout), dc in next sc, [sc in each of next 2 dc, dc in each of next 2 sc] across, turn.
Row 10: Ch 1, sc in each of first 2 dc, [dc in each of next 2 sc, sc in each of next 2 dc] across, turn.
Row 11: Ch 1, sc in each st across. Do not turn. Fasten off.
Row 12: Join C with a sl st in first sc, ch 1, sc in same sc, sc in each rem sc across, turn.
Row 13: Ch 2, [sk next sc, 3 hdc in next sc, sk next sc, hdc in next sc] across to last sc, hdc in last sc, turn. (90 hdc)
Row 14: Ch 2, [hdc in next hdc, ch 1, 2-hdc dec (see Special Stitches) in next 3 hdc, ch 1] across, ending with hdc in 2nd ch of turning ch-2, turn.
Row 15: Ch 1, sc in each hdc, each 2-hdc dec and each ch across. Do not turn. Fasten off. (90 sc)
Row 16: Join A with sl at in first sc, ch 1, sc in same sc, sc in each rem sc across, turn.
Rows 17 & 18: Rep rows 2 and 3.
Rows 19-21: With D, rep rows 4-6.
Rows 22-26: With A, rep rows 7-11.
Rows 27-30: With E, rep rows 12-15.
Row 31: Rep row 16.
Rows 32-45: Rep rows 2-15.
Row 46: Rep row 16.
Rows 47 & 48: Rep rows 2 and 3.
Rows 49-51: With D, rep rows 4-6.
Rows 52-56: With A, rep rows 7-11.
Rows 57-60: With E, rep rows 12-15.
Row 61: Rep row 16.
Rows 62-75: rep rows 2-15.
Row 76: Rep row 16.
Rows 77 & 78: Rep rows 2 and 3.

Fringe
Matching color of fringe to color of row being worked, cut 2 lengths each 12 inches long for each row. Holding both lengths tog, fold in half, insert hook from back to front through end st of row, draw folded end through to form lp, draw loose ends of lengths and ends left for finishing through lp and pull tightly. Attach fringe evenly spaced across each short edge of Afghan. Trim ends even.
