This blue-ribbon design features two winning versions that are equally wonderful. Choose the pattern using the popcorn stitch, or the alternate version that’s made using cluster stitches.

Special Stitches
Popcorn Stitch Version
Popcorn (pc): 7 dc in indicated ch sp, pull up lp, remove hook, insert hook in first dc of 7-dc group, pick up dropped lp, pull through st on hook.
Beginning popcorn (beg pc): Ch 3 (counts as first dc), 6 dc in indicated ch sp, pull up lp, remove hook, insert hook in top of beg ch-3, pick up dropped lp, pull through st on hook.
Cluster Stitch Version
Cluster (cl): Holding last lp of each st on hook, 5 dc in indicated ch sp, yo, pull through all lps.
Beginning cluster (beg cl): Ch 2, holding last lp of each st on hook, 4 dc in indicated ch sp, yo, pull through all lps on hook.
Both Versions
Shell: (3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in indicated ch sp or st.
Beginning shell (beg shell): Sl st in indicated st, ch 3 (counts as first dc), (2 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in same st or sp.

Rnd 1: Ch 6, sl st in first ch to form ring, ch 1, 13 sc in ring, join with sl st in beg sc. (13 sc)
Rnd 2: Ch 3 (counts as first dc), dc in each st around, join with sl st in 3rd ch of beg ch-3. (13 dc)
Rnd 3: Ch 1, 2 sc in each st around, join with sl st in beg sc. (26 sc)

Notes: Before beg rnd 19, decide if you want to work pcs or cls for rnds 19-25. The pcs will create a raised surface and the cls will maintain the flat surface.
The pattern will indicate to work a pc. However, if you choose to make the cl st version, replace the pc st directions with those for the cl st.
Rnd 19: Sl st in next ch-3 sp (this ch-3 sp will be centered directly above the last ch-2 sp of a small pineapple), beg pc (see Special Stitches) in same ch sp, *[ch 3, sc in next ch sp] 3 times**, ch 3, pc (see Special Stitches) in next ch-3 sp, rep from * around, ending last rep at **, ch 1, dc in top of beg pc.
